Presentation of Cameroon
Cameroon is a country in Central Africa which has the total area of over 475440km2 with 90400km2 used for agriculture. Cameroon is bordered by Nigeria in the west, Central African Republic in the east, Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea in the south and Chad in the north.
The oriental part of Cameroon is a former French colony while the west is a former British colony. The oriental and western parts of Cameroon merged in 1961 to become the Federal Republic of Cameroon. It was renamed United Republic of Cameroon in 1972 and has been known as Republic of Cameroon since 1984.
Cameroon has several big cities; YAOUNDE, the political capital of the country, has more than a million inhabitants; DOUALA is the economical capital with more than two million inhabitants. Other cities such as BAFOUSSAM, MAROUA, BAMENDA and GAROUA are also important urban areas.
Cameroon has 240 ethnic groups divided in three big groups (Bantus, semi Bantus, Sudanese). They speak about 240 national languages. The most representative ethnic groups are:
- Bantus: Béti, Bassa, Bakoko, Bakundu, Maka, Douala, Pygmies
- Semi-Bantus: Bamiléké, Gbaya, Bamoun, Tikar
- Sudanese: Foulbé, Mafa, Toupouri, Arabes-Choas, Moun
In 1999, the population was estimated at 14,693,000 inhabitants, while in 1995 the population was estimated at 13,233,000. 7,295,000, or 55 % of the people, are.
French and English are the official languages.
